| February 12, 2007 - 2007 World Series of Mah-Jong X Results - First and Second Rounds |
|
The tenth annual World Series of Mah-Jong commenced Sunday, with Victor and Kim graciously hosting. Twelve competitors began the day with a shot at the title. The final four includes the reigning champion and three possible first-time winners. Pascal, Randy, Richard, and Victor will meet at a later date to complete the final round. Once again, home field advantage has yielded positive results for the host. Victor has continued what seems to be an on-going trend of success playing at home. Also, Randy makes his first ever appearance in the final four. (Click here to see the new Final Four Appearances table on the Hall of Champions page.) And of course, Richard will try to become the first back-to-back champion in the ten year history of the WSoMJ. This will be the fourth time a champion has had the opportunity to repeat. Based on James' odds (see below), the final table consists of two dark horses and two long shots. Rich, who is always underestimated, is actually getting more respect at 13:1, better than last year's 15:1. Randy and Pascal both come in at 8:1, and Victor is the longest shot at 15:1. Who among the final four will emerge victorious? Can Rich win back-to-back? Will James have to follow in Eric's footsteps and pay out against long odds? Will somebody "jah woo?" Will we ever get our free Sizzler's dinner? These are all questions worth pondering while perusing the statistics for the first two rounds. (Click here to see the statistics for WSoMJ X.) Check out Second Round - Table Two - Game One, and see one way someone can "lum jong" twice in a row without actually winning! Thanks, Henry! The WSoMJ just would not be the same without at least one player commiting the dreaded "jah woo!" Links: WSoMJ X Statistics WSoMJ Hall of Champions/Final Four Appearances |

James, aka "Jimmy the Greek," has posted his odds for the World Series of Mah-Jong X:

| April 24, 2006 - 2006 WSoMJ Champion Crowned... | ||||||||||
|
The final table met on Sunday, April 23, and a new champion has been crowned. Against the longest odds, according to Eric the Greek, Rich has battled his way to win the 2006 World Series of Mah-Jong. Congratulations to another first time winner! To many, Rich was destined to win by virtue of home field advantage. By all accounts, every time a competitor has hosted a final table, that competitor has won. Now that Rich has won and came through against 15-1 odds, will he get a little more respect next time around??? (And who noticed how James got out of the handicapping business just in time? Was it a case of serendipity, or did James know something the rest of us didn't know???) And true to his word, Rich has offered a free meal if he won. So I guess we're goin' to Sizzler! Congratulations again go out to Rich, our 2006 champion!

| February 19, 2006 - World Series of Mah-Jong IX Results - First and Second Rounds |
|
The ninth World Series of Mah-Jong kicked off today, and the beginning field of twelve has been pared down to the final four. The WSoMJ had its share of action, controversy, and even another jah-woo! But when it was all said and done, the final four includes the reigning champion* (note the asterick, I mean asterisk) , a former champion, today's host, and a certain 16 to 1 longshot! First round action started out with the following tables: Table 1: Henry, James, Peter, and Ryan (also known as Three Kwans vs. One Siu) Table 2: Charles, Pascal, Randy, and Victor Table 3: Jenny, Patrick, Paul, and Richard The lowest score on each table was eliminated. From Table 1, Ryan was eliminated, under protest, but eliminated nonetheless. From Table 2, Randy had the low score, and from Table 3, Paul did not make the cut. To trim down the remaining players for two tables, the lowest remaining score was supposed to be eliminated. With a loss of 94 chips, the current champion, Patrick, was slated for elimination. However, CQ had to leave early because of an unforseen family obligation. Amid controversy and vocal objections, the group decided to let Patrick back in for Round 2. In the second round, the tables had the following players: Table 1: Henry, Patrick, Peter, and Richard Table 2: James, Jenny, Pascal, and Victor From Table 1, Patrick and Richard moved on to the final round. Richard has once again been rated as the longest shot in the field at 16 to 1, yet this is his third final round appearance in the last four years. Also, the only reason Patrick still has a chance to be the first to win back-to-back is because CQ had to leave early. No doubt, there will be those who would view such a feat with a Roger Maris-like asterisk. From Table 2, Jenny and Pascal advanced. Table 2 definitely had more action than Table 1. There were a lot of big hands, with Jenny leading the pack. Pascal's advancement actually came down to the last hand, although it took a late jah-woo to get to that point. With a sizable buffer and only a few hands left, Pascal took a near fatal misstep. He thought he had his own flower to make his chicken hand a one-pointer, but ended up having to pass out 64 chips to everyone. Because of the jah-woo, James actually was ahead of Pascal up until the last hand. With a bow pang to finish the round, Pascal squeaks by James to join the final table for the second time in three years. The final round will take place soon. Time and location will be announced shortly, and will depend on the availability of the remaining players. A big thanks goes out to Pascal for providing the venue. Also, thanks to Paul and James for bringing the drinks. Please visit back soon to check out the statistics. |

entire tournament played out in a single session. The final table had three previous champions,
but in the end, this year's champion is a first time winner. It took four trips to the final table,
but Patrick finally captured the crown and becomes the sixth player to reach the pinnacle. Check back soon... statistics will be posted shortly. BTW, did anyone notice that in the second round, CQ actually lost more chips than Henry, but got to advance to the final round? In the meantime, wrap your brain around this: |

| March 20, 2004 - James Is the First Three Time Winner! |
| It's official... we now have a three time winner! So first off, congratulations to James for a well-played contest. I will say this, he didn't try to sprint to the finish with his lead... he kept shooting so often that even Jenny was wondering what he was doing! The game wasn't decided until the final hand, with both Patrick and Pascal within one hand of passing James, and Rich holding the dice. Hey, all Rich needed to make his 32 to 1 was win two self-pick lahts! Oh well, no free prime rib dinners this year... |
